Georgia has 7 principal regions: Kartli – Heartland of the country home to Tbilisi (Capital and largest city), Mtskheta, Gori (Birthplace of Stalin), and Stepantsminda (formerly Kazbegi); Rioni – Centre of Western Georgia and home to tremendous mountain scenery; Kakheti – Centre of the Georgian wine industry; Southwestern Georgia – Subtropical region on Black Sea Coast with resort of Batumi; Northwestern Georgia – Upper Svaneti mountains; Samtskhe-Javakheti – Home to ethnic Armenian population and the famous Sapara Monastery; Disputed Territories (Abkhazia, South Ossetia) – Georgia’s breakaway regions, and in conflict with the Georgia government. The main cities of Georgia are: Tbilisi (Georgia's largest and most cosmopolitan city); Kutaisi (Georgia's second city); Batumi (Black Sea resort with palm trees); Gori (Joseph Stalin's hometown); Telavi (capital of Kakheti wine growing region); Sukhumi (capital of Abkhazia); Mtskheta (capital of Eastern Georgia); Borjomi (known for famous mineral water); Akhaltsikhe (near Vardzia and the Sapara Monastery). Highlights include: Tbilisi with great views from the cable car and funicular railway; the wine tour in Telavi; and Georgian food and drink especially Chakapuli (stew made from lamb chops or veal, onions, tarragon leaves, cherry plums or tkemali, dry white wine). The only disappointing aspect of the TLD staff visits, as we are all members of the Tartan Army, were 2 successive defeats in Euro football qualifiers to the Georgian National football team. We will be back but hopefully not on football duties.

Georgia Gudauri Skiing Area Hotels

Georgia is one of the oldest wine producing areas in the world, particularly in the South Caucasus fertile valleys such as those located in the region of Kakheti and the areas of Telavi (pictured below) and Kvareli.  Georgian wines are classified as sweet, semi-sweet, semi-dry, dry, fortified and sparkling. The semi-sweet varieties are the most popular. Georgia wine is traditionally fermented and stored in large earthenware pots called Kvevri - a key feature of this method is no requirement for chemical preservatives - thus creating superior taste. Telavi is within 1.5 hours drive from Tbilisi and a wine tour can be booked from most hotels. The image was taken by © 2015 TLD Images for Travel Links Directory TLD and shows the view looking from the Schuchmann Vineyards northwards towards the cloud topped Caucasus mountains.
