Gran Canaria. Pop. 790,360. The 3rd largest island in the Canaries. It is sometimes referred to as a “Miniature Continent” due to the different climates and landscapes on the island. The north is cooler, the south is warmer and sunnier, the east coast is peppered with beaches whereas the west coast is mountainous. The Capital is Las Palmas de Gran Canaria with a population of 377,600. The city has busy beaches nearby - Las Canteras and Las Alcaravaneras, a busy harbour - Puerto de la Luz and the Spanish Colonial Museum. Gran Canarias main tourist area is in the south centered in the Maspalomas area which includes the towns of San Agustín, Playa del Inglés, Sonnenland, and Maspalomas. Key visitor attractions are include, The Dunes of Maspalomas, Maspalomas Lighthouse and the fishing city of Arguineguin.
