Graz is the second largest city in Austria and is the capital of the state of Styria. The city is situated on the Mur river, in the south east of Austria and is close to Slovenia on the south east of the Alps. It’s location gives it a relatively moderate climate and it enjoys more sunshine than Salzburg and Vienna. Graz has a remarkable Old Town, which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999. Sights in the Old Town include: Uhrturm clocktower; Neue Gallerie; The Landeszeughaus, armoury; Dom (cathedral); Murinsel (an artificial island in the river Mur); and last but not least the Schloßberg (hill dominating the old town with great views of the city). To travel to and from Graz from the main train station (Hauptbahnhof), you can take regional trains to most of Styria. Direct trains also run to most major cities nearby including Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Maribor and Ljubljana in Slovenia, Zagreb in Croatia, Prague in the Czech Republic, Budapest in Hungary and Zurich in Switzerland. Trains for Vienna leave every hour. Graz is also famous as the birth place of Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was born and raised in the farming village of Thal, 2 km from Graz.
