Greece is a small Mediterranean country, which consists of a mountainous mainland and over 1400 islands. The combination of a rugged mainland coastline and the islands gives Greece the tenth longest coastline in the world at 14,880 km (9,246.00 miles). The country is divide into 5 main regions: Attica (including Athens); The Peloponnesel Central and Northern Greece; Crete; and The Greek Islands (includng the Dodecanese, the Cyclades, and the Ionian Islands). The major cities include: Athens (capital and largest city); Thessaloniki (second largest city); Heraklion (Crete's largest city); Patra (third largest mainland city); and Larissa (fourth largest city). Greece is one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations and the number of yearly visitors regularly exceeds the 11 million population. Visitors are not only drawn to the Greek islands and beaches but also the historical sites and spectacular mountain scenery which includes Mount Olympus ("home of the gods") the highest mountain at 2,917 m (9,570.21 ft). Among the famous historical sites and a visible connection to the Ancient Greek Civilization is the Parthenon and the Acropolis of Athens. Other key historical sites include: Delphi; Epidaurus; Olympia; Meteora; Mou to the rugged terrain the rail-network is not as extensive as other European countries although the national rail network is currently under major renovation. The islands are well connected by ferry and TLD staff have used the domestic air service to cross the mainland from Ioannina to Thessaloniki. While in Greece many tourists will want to sample Greek wines including Retsina (the flavor comes from pine resin( and Greek Liquors including Ouzo and Raki.
