The "glacier village" of Grindelwald, at 1,033m (3,388 ft.), is a popular winter sports destination and also attracts walkers and climbers looking to ascend the Eiger and Wetterhorn mountains. Grindelwald is surrounded by alpine hamlets, swift streams, and spectacular classic Alpine scenery. Although at first the hiking options and cable-car networks might seem baffling, the tourist office will provide maps of the local peaks and valleys. One of the attractions in Grindelwald is the ountain train trip through Kleine Scheidegg (2061m) up to Jungfraujoch (3454m) where there is an observation terrace and "ice palace". Grindelwald is 157 km / 98 miles from Zurich, the nearest airport. Travel time from Zürich is 3 hours by car and 4 hours by train. The resort is 233 km / 145 miles from Geneva and 74 km / 46 miles from Berne. Grindelwald can also be reached by train (Berner Oberland Bahn) from Interlaken.
