Guilin (Chinese: ¹ðÁÖ; Hanyu Pinyin: Gu¨¬l¨ªn; Wade-Giles: Kuei-lin, Postal map spelling: Kweilin; Zhuang: Gveilinz) is one of China's most picturesque cities, with a population of 670,000, situated in the northeast of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China on the west bank of the Lijiang River (also called the Li River). Its name means "forest of Sweet Osmanthus", owing to the large number of fragrant Sweet Osmanthus trees located in the city.
Most travellers to Guilin will take a river trip down the Li River on tourboats. These boats are frequent and easily organised by any hotel in Guilin. Most will go from Guilin to Yangshuo (a very picturesque village downstream). The river winds through some truly spectacular limestone formations and Karst landscapes.
