Gwailo - A Chinese word for a foreigner, specifically a European. Translated variously as "ghost person" and "white devil." It describes the pale complexion, the sometimes "red hair and green/blue eyes" of Caucasians. The term is considered derogatory by some people.
In Mandarin, guizi is a similar term to gwailo. When the term is translated into English, it is often translated as foreign devil. The term arose in the 19th century and is associated with the demonization of Europeans during the occupation of China by foreign powers.
