Ho Chi Minh City. Pop. 7,123,340 00. Currency Vietnamese Dong. Language Vietnamese. Time Zone GMT + 7 hours. Main Airport Tan Son Nhat International Airport SGN. Best Time to go during the dry season between December and March. Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city in Vietnam. Prior to 1975 the city was called Saigon until renamed after the communist leader Ho Chi Minh. The city is situated on the banks of the Saigon River, 60 kilometers (37 miles) from the South China Sea and 1,760 kilometers (1,094 miles) south of Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. The city has had a number of influences from its humble beginnings as a small fishing village known as Prey Nokor. These influences included the French who occupied the city 1859 and the city has a number of classical Western-style buildings reflecting this time. Buildings and places to visit include: Reunification Palace; War Remnants Museum; City Hall; Museum of Vietnamese History; Ho-Chi-Minh Museum; Thien Hau Pagoda; and Phung Son Tu Pagoda. The City has a number of interesting parks and waterways such as Dam Sen Water Park, Dai Nam Tourist Park, and the Saigon River itself. Like the capital Hanoi the city is full of motorbikes and crossing the road can be a nightmare for Westerners used to traffic laws and traffic lights.
