Hong Kong International Airport (IATA: HKG, ICAO: VHHH) is the principal airport for Hong Kong and is located 34km (21 miles) northwest of Hong Kong Island. It is known as Chek Lap Kok Airport because it was built on the island of Chek Lap Kok which was largely established by land reclamation. The airport fully opened in 1998 and replaced Kai Tak airport. In 2008 The new airport was the 12th busiest airport worldwide in terms of passenger throughput and is now the primary hub for Cathay Pacific, Dragonair, Hong Kong Express Airways, Hong Kong Airlines, and Air Hong Kong. The new airport project included the establishment of fast links between the terminals and a fast rail service to inner Hong Kong. This fast rail service, the Airport Express, is operated by MTR (Mass Transit Railway) and takes 24 minutes to reach central Hong Kong. Passengers can also transfer by bus and taxi. The airport also connects to various locations in Hong Kong by ferry.
