The name Honolulu means "sheltered bay" or "peace of shelter" in Hawaiian, and its natural harbour developed into an ideal stop over for shipping travelling across the Pacific Ocean from North America to Asia. The US navy saw strategic potential of Honolulu and established a major naval base at Pearl Harbor in Western Honolulu. The base was attacked by the Japanese on December 7th 1941, and over 2000 personnel were killed. Pearl Harbor still serves as a naval base and there are a number of memorials honouring the fallen, including the USS Arizona Memorial. Alongside with visitors to the military sights, Honolulu attracts thousands of tourists to its beaches, particularly Waikiki Beach. The beach is an excellent location for swimming, sunbathers, catamaran and outrigger canoes, as well as a great area for novice surfers and body boarders. Honolulu is also blessed with some spectacular natural scenery with the Diamond Head volcanic crater providing superb views of the city.
