The city was founded in 1836 by the Allen brothers and named after General Sam Houston in 1837. Houston grew as a result of oil discovery in the early 1900s and the city also grew as a large port and railroad hub. In more recent times Houston became the home of the Texas Medical Center, the world's largest concentration of healthcare and research institutions, and NASA's Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center. The city is now home to many Fortune 500 companies, only New York has more, and it has a wide base of different industries. However, arguably the most famous attraction is the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo - The world's largest rodeo which includes rodeo events, calf scramble, and music concerts. It is known for its big-name music acts as much as it is for the rodeo. The livestock show attracts professional breeders who bring in their world-class livestock to be judged and given prizes.
