China Yangtze Three Gorges Project (TGP), as one of the biggest hydropower-complex project in the world, ranks as the key project for improvement and development of Yangtze River. The dam is located in the areas of Xilingxia gorge, one of the three gorges of the river, which will control a drainage area of 1 million km2 , with an average annual runoff of 451 billion m3.
The Yangtze River or Chang Jiang is the longest river in Asia and the third longest in the world, after the Nile in Africa, and the Amazon in South America. As of 2007, it is the largest hydroelectric river dam in the world, more than five times the size of the Hoover Dam. As with many dams, there is a debate over the costs and benefits of the Three Gorges Dam. Although there are economic benefits from flood control and hydroelectric power, there are also concerns about the future of 1.13 million people who will be displaced by the rising waters, the loss of many valuable archaeological and cultural sites, as well as the effects on the environment.
