Interlaken first developed as a centre of excellence for printing, textiles, and watchmaking. As leisure time increased the town became popular with activity tourists. Backpackers and winter sports enthusiasts are regular visitors with many of them off to explore the Jungfrau Mountain. Along with traditional activities such a skiing and walking there are other newer sports including: paragliding, hang gliding, bungee jumping, canyoning, and river rafting. The town is well served with two railway stations Interlaken Ost and Interlaken West and two funicular railways, the Harderbahn and the Heimwehfluhbahn. Souvenir hunters will be pleased to know that Interlaken has over 20 souvenir shops along its main street. Arguably, the most famous souvenir to buy is the Swiss Army Knife which is stocked in the "Swiss Knife Center” store and many other shops. Remember to pack your knife in your check in luggage.

Interlaken is a small city in the Jungfrau Region of central Switzerland. Located between two Alpine Lakes (Brienz and Thun), Interlaken is a popular base camp for outdoor sports and travel in the surrounding Bernese Oberland Alps. Interlaken itself is a superb holiday destination.
Lake Brienz (German: Brienzersee) is a lake just north of the Alps, in the Canton of Berne in Switzerland. The lake took its name from the village Brienz on its northern shore. Interlaken and the villages Matten and Unterseen lie to the south west of the lake. The shores are steep, and there is almost no shallow water in the entire lake.
The Aar (German Aare) is the longest river that both rises and ends entirely within Switzerland. The Aar Gorge (Aareschlucht) is a section of the river that carves through a limestone ridge near the town of Meiringen.
Interlaken is a municipality in the district of Interlaken in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. It is a well known tourist destination in the Bernese Oberland. The Aare River flows through the town. Interlaken is located between Lake Brienz to the east and Lake Thun to the west.
