The Republic of Ireland is situated to the west of the United Kingdom with the Atlantic Ocean on it’s western coastline. The country is divided into 26 counties stretching from County Kerry in the south up to County Donegal in the north. The principal cities and towns are: Dublin (capital city); Cork (second largest city); Galway (famous for its festivals); Kilkenny (attractive medieval town); Letterkenny (main town in County Donegal); Limerick (centre of Irish rugby); Sligo (great scenery); Waterford (Ireland's oldest city); and Wexford (south east town). Ireland has many beautiful areas for visitors including: The Aran Islands; The Burren and the Cliffs of Moher; Connemara; West Cork Mountains; Kinsale in County Cork; The Ring of Kerry; Glendalough ruins; and The Dingle Penninsula. Ireland has a well developed economy with a profusion of hi-tec industries especially around the Dublin area. Ireland's population is the fastest growing in Europe, with an annual growth rate of 2.5%. The country is known for it’s culture musical literary and sporting giants including: Turlough O'Carolan (composer); James Joyce (writer); Oscar Wilde (writer); Christy Moore (musician); The Chieftans (folk band); Robert Boyle (scientist); U2 (supergroup); Riverdance (dance troupe); Richard Harris (actor); Roy Keane (footballer); Brian O'Driscoll (rugby player); Ken Doherty (snooker player); Stephen Roche (tour de france winner); and Pádraig Harrington (British Open Golf winner). Ireland is also a great place for beer especially heavy beers and stouts. The most famous variety is Guinness, brewed in Dublin and available throughout the country. Murphy's and Beamish stout are brewed in Cork and available mainly in the south of the country. Murphy's is slightly sweeter and creamier-tasting than Guinness, while Beamish has a strong, almost burnt taste.
