Best Time to Go – Summer, as most events are on then, but can be very hot in July - August. Izmir is the 3rd largest city in Turkey and has the second biggest port after Istanbul. The history of Izmir stretches back to around 3000 BC when the Trojans founded the city and successive dynasties have occupied the city from those early times. In those days thc city was called Smyrna, but it has evolved into a modern, developed, and busy commercial center, set around a huge bay and surrounded by mountains. Despite being subject to frequent earthquakes and being almost burned to the ground after the first world war, the city retains attractions for the visitor. Arguably the most significant areas in the city is Konak Square, famous for the clock tower, one of the unique smybols of Izmir. As the city is surrounded by hills the inventive residents devised 2 ingenious systems to climb the slopes. These are the Asansör (Elevator), and the Teleferik (Teleferic). After walking around the city many visitors head to the Izmir beaches on the Aegean sea coastline. The city also plenty of nice snacks ncluding: the famous shish kebabs; grilled sea bass; melons; Kumru (a kind of warm sandwich); and Tulum Peyniri (a local cheese).
