KAMAL - First used by Arabs then by Chinese navigators. The Kamal was a celestial navigation device that determined latitude. It was simply constructed with a wooden card and string and used equally spaced knots to determine basic navigation on a vessel.

Kamal - wikipedia

A kamal is a celestial navigation device that determines latitude. The kamal was used primarily used by the Arabs during the Islamic Golden Age and later the Chinese in the 18th and 19th centuries. Some researchers also believe that the Kamal was used in ancient India by navigators on ships trading between the Middle East and Southwest India and that it was passed on to Arabic navigators.

Travel Quote: The traveller was active; he went strenuously in search of people, of adventure, of experience. The tourist is passive; he expects interesting things to happen to him. He goes "sight-seeing". Daniel J. Boorstin.
