Kanchanaburi is a city in west Thailand and is located where the Kwai Noi and Kwai Yai rivers converge into the Mae Klong river. In 1942, under Japanese control, the famous Bridge on the River Kwai and ‘death railway’ was built by Prisoners Of War (POWs). A memorial and two museums are also located in Kanchanaburi: The Thailand-Burma Railway Museum (opened in March 2003), and the JEATH War Museum about the bridge. Visitors can take a very moving journey on the ‘death railway’ – a tribute to both allied soldiers and Asian workers who built it, and there are memorials to them all along the route. Very ironically the line ends at Nam Tok, home to a spectacular waterfall and one of the most beautiful places in the Kanchanaburi province. Must see places for visitors include – Bridge over the River Kwai, Hellfire Pass, Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, Don Chedi Archaeological Site, Erawan Waterfalls, and Sai Yok Noi.
