Kansai Kyoto International Airport (IATA: KIX, ICAO: RJBB) is an international airport located on an artificial island in the middle of Osaka Bay, 38 km (24 miles) southwest of saka Station. (Osaka International Airport, which is nearer to the city, now only handles domestic flights). The airport was officially opened on 4th Sept 1994. Kansai serves as a hub for several airlines such as All Nippon Airways, Japan Airlines, and Nippon Cargo Airlines. It is also the international gateway for Japan's Kansai region, which contains the major cities of Kyoto, Kobe, and Osaka. A second runway opened on 2 August 2007 to handle increase traffic with a third runway being planned. Kansai has a single four-storey terminal and at present It is the longest airport terminal in the world - at a total length of 1.7 km (1.1 miles) from end to end. Transfers from Kansai are via the Sky Gate Bridge R, a road / railroad bridge to Rinku Town and the mainland. Travellers have the option of rail or bus over the bridge. There is also a high-speed ferry route, which runs between Kobe Airport and Kansai. For air passengers with an early departure time or with limited time in Osaka there are some airport hotels near to Kansai including: Hotel Nikko Kansai Airport, ANA Gate Tower Hotel, Washington Hotel, and Bellevue Garden Hotel.
