Best time to go – November to January, dry cool weather. Khon Kaen is the commercial and political centre of north eastern Thailand (Isaan), and is 449 kilometers northeast of Bangkok. The city is one of the fastest growing areas in Thailand and is being touted as an export centre for trade into the Indo-China region. Historically the city and province are well known for the silk cloth that is still manufactured in the area, and visitors can travel to tour Chonnabot Silk District (60km away). Local tourist leaders are promoting Khon Kaen as a quieter, more relaxed, and traditional location – you are as likely to see a water buffalo meandering through the streets as a BMW car. The province is also a good starting point for trips into Laos and Cambodia. Places to visit include - Khon Kaen National Museum, Horse Racing Track, Bung Kaen Nakhon, and Wat Nongwang. Thinks to see further away include - Phu Wiang National Park, Tortoise Village, and the Ubolrat Dam.
