Kiev. Pop. 2,797,553. Currency - Hryvnia (UAH). Language – Ukrainian (with Russian as a second language). Time Zone GMT + 2 hours. Main airport – Boryspil International Airport KBP. Best Time to go – generally the best time is late spring, especially during the month of May. Mid-summer is also very nice but temperatures can creep up to a sweltering +35° C. Kiev lies in the north central part of the country on the mighty Dnieper River which flows south to the Black Sea. The Dnieper is both a major transport artery for Kiev and also a major source of hydro-electricity. Kiev is an ancient city and can trace its official origins back to the 5th century, although there is evidence of much earlier settlements. The golden age of Kiev stretched from the 10th to the early 13th century when it was installed as the capital of Ukraine. From the middle of the 13th century the city was subjected to invasion by the Mongols and annexation by Russia, until the collapse of the Soviet Union and the following Declaration of Independence on 24 August 1991, when Kiev was reaffirmed as the capital of an independent Ukraine. As befits an ancient capital the city has many historic attractions which survived significant damage during world war II. Visitors will be impressed by Khreschatyk Street - The principal drag of the city centre and populated by many western branded stores, bars, and restaurants. Looking up visitors will also note a number of golden domed religious buildings including: St Sophia's Cathedral; St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery; and St Andrew's Church. Two significant attractions which can be visited as part of the same trip are: Kiev Pechersk Lavra (A cave monastery); and the Motherland Statue and War memorials. Both of these sites overlook the vast Dnieper River and you should give yourself a good 3 to 4 hours to see these locations. However, the arguably the two most well known sites are: Great Gate of Kiev - A 1982 reconstruction of the Golden Gates of Kiev; and Maydan Nezalezhnosti - Independence Square, and known throughout the world as the place where political supporters of Yuschenko and the Orange Revolution camped for many weeks during 2004. A member of TLD staff visited the city in October 2006 and recommended the local vodka and the beautiful Kiev ladies.
