Krakow or Cracow was the old capital city of Poland and is regarded as the spiritual capital. It is located in the south of the country on the river Vistula and close to the Carpathian mountains. Famous sites include the Main Market Square with St. Mary's Basilica and the Sukiennice Cloth Hall, the Wawel Castle, the National Art Museum, the Zygmunt Bell at the Wawel Cathedral, and the medieval St Florian's Gate with the Barbican along the Royal Coronation Route. UNESCO in 1978 added Krakow's historic centre, which includes the Old Town, Kazimierz and the Wawel Castle to the list of World Heritage Sites. Outside the city places to see include the Wieliczka salt mine, and the Tatra Mountains 100 kilometers (62 miles) to the south. Another attraction are the unique alcoholic drinks produced in the city and region. These include: grzaniec (heated wine with cloves); tatanka (beverage made with apple juice and a special kind of vodka called zubrowka); and Wodka miodowa (honey vodka, often served chilled in shots).
