Kyoto. Pop. 1,500,000. Currency Japanese Yen. Language Japanese. Time Zone – GMT + 7 hours. Main Airport Kansai International Airport SGN. Best Time to go – spring and autumn months of March, April, May and September, October and November. Kyoto is located in near the mountains of Western Honshu and was the former imperial capital of Japan. During this time the city built up a large collection of palaces, temples and shrines, built for emperors, shoguns, and monks. Kyoto avoided much of the bombardment during the 2nd world war and most of the pre-war buildings are still standing. The city is organised into 5 historic districts: Central (Site of Nijo Castle); Arashiyama (Western Kyoto); Higashiyama (Eastern Kyoto); North (Site of gilded pavilion of Kinkaku-ji); and South (Includes a large part the former old capital). The city offers a large number of sites including the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto which are on UNESCO's World Heritage List. Two outstanding attractions are Nijo Castle and the golden pavilion of Kinkaku-ji. The latter is a Zen Buddhist temple and features on numerous guide books and postcards of Japan. The city is also famous for cherry blossom and many visitors come during springtime to the park areas in Kyoto to look at this natural phenomenon.
