La Défense is major business district which stretches over the municipalities of Nanterre, Courbevoie and Puteaux. La Defense is locate at the western end of the Historical Axis which extends from the Louvre along the Champs-Élysées and the Arc de Triomphe before terminating at La Défense. The district is home to the spectacular Grand Arche and many of the tallest buildings in Paris. The name La Défense comes from a statue of the same name which was errected in 1883 as a commemoration to soldiers who defended the city during the during the Franco-Prussian War (19 July 1870 – 10 May 1871). In the 1960’s the then president of France – Charles de Gaulle, led plans to establish a single business district which would not impact on the historical character of central Paris. Through time the area was developed with large scale buildings and office developments including: the Nobel Tower (1966); Total Main Office (1985); and the iconic Grand Arche (1989). Future development are in the design and construction phase – these include Tour Signal, Tour Phare, Hermitage Plaza and Tour Generali. Along with the strategic business activity of the district there is the "Quatre Temps" shopping mall – one of the largest shopping centres in Europe, with numerous brand name stores, several cinemas, large supermarket and grocery store. La Défense is the modern high-rise and office-tower district of Paris, located beyond the arrondissements of central Paris at the start of the western outskirts of the city, beyond the last Parisian loop of the river Seine. The district is at the westernmost extremity of Paris's 10 km long Historical Axis, which starts at the Louvre in Central Paris.
La Grande Arche was inaugurated in July 1989, with grand military parades that marked the bicentennial of the French revolution. It completed the line of monuments that forms the Axe historique running through Paris.
