La Paz is the capital of Bolivia but the largest city is Santa Cruz de la Sierra. Uniquely, La Paz is the highest administrative capital in the world at 3,600 meters (11,811 feet). The city was founded in 1548 by Alonso de Mendoza. In 1825, after the decisive victory of the republicans at Ayacucho over the Spanish army in the course of the South American Wars of Independence, the city's full name was changed to LaPaz de Ayacucho. La Paz is a city which can be a sight in itself, and there are several viewing places or miradores offering impressive panoramas including Parque Laikacota and Mirador Monticulo. Other attactions include Sagarnaga Street, The Witches' Market, The Mercado Negro, Calle Jaen, Plaza Murillo, and The Valle de La Luna.

The city's main thoroughfare, which roughly follows the river, changes names over its length, but the central tree-lined section running through the downtown core is called the Prado.
The North Yungas Road is a 61 to 69 km road (depending on source) leading from La Paz to Coroico, 56 km (35 miles) northeast of La Paz in the Yungas region of Bolivia. It is legendary for its extreme danger and in 1995 the Inter-American Development Bank christened it as the "world's most dangerous road".
