Lille. Pop. 226,800 – Located in northern France on the Deûle River near the border with Belgium, and is the capital of the Nord-Pas de Calais region. A former coal mining centre Lille has become an important service industry centre and is also a large student population. In 2004 Lille along with Genoa (Italy) was awarded European Capital of Culture.
