Sofia International Airport (IATA: SOF, ICAO: LBSF) is located 5 km (3.1 miles) east of Sofia. The airport has seen a large increase in passenger traffic, which includes both domestic and international flights. There have also been a large number of winter tourists heading for ski resorts such as Borovets and Bansko. These resorts are also experiencing an increase in summer tourists, which in turn is increasing Sofia airport passenger numbers. As the airport is close to Sofia many travellers will choose hotel accommodation near the city centre. Transfers to the airport are via shuttle bus, and taxi. There is a plan to build a metro connection to the airport with a completion date of 2014. From our own experience the city taxi service worked very well and the Sofia taxi drivers are very skilled and negotiating rush hour traffic.
