Linz. Pop. 188,968. Currency Euro. Language German. Time Zone GMT + 1 hours. Blue Danube Airport LNZ. Best Time to go – year round location. Linz is the 3rd largest city in Austria and is situated in northern Austria on the river Danube. Linz was founded by the Romans, and the city grew into an important manufacturing city. The city was further developed by the Nazis before and during World War II to produce chemicals and steel for the 3rd Reich military. Unlike many other Austrian cities Linz doesn’t rely on tourism as it is very much an industrial city and transportation hub. The city lies on Austria's main rail axis, the so-called "Westbahn", linking Vienna with western Austria, Germany and Switzerland. There are also varying types of river transport on the Danube; from industrial barges to tourist cruise ships. Linz has had some well know residents in the past including: Johannes Kepler (Mathematician); Anton Bruckner (Composer); Ludwig Wittgenstein (Philosopher); and Richard Tauber (Classical Singer). However, the most infamous resident was Adolf Hitler who wanted to turn Linz into the cultural centre of the Third Reich.
