Lisbon. Pop. 552,700. Currency - Euro. Language – Portuguese. Time Zone GMT + 0 hours. Main airport – Lisbon Portela Airport LIS. Best Time to go – all year round destination. Lisbon is the capital and largest city in Portugal. It is located on the Atlantic Ocean coast in the west of the country, at the point where the river Tagus flows into the Atlantic Ocean. The city is made up of a number of distinct districts including: Chiado (elegant shopping district); Bairro Alto (hill area with great city views); Baxia (downtown); Alfama (area with Arabic influence); Praça do Comércio (starting point of downtown); and Belém (full of monuments). The city has many outstanding architectural sights both ancient and modern. These include: Castelo de São Jorge (St. George's Castle); Ponte 25 de Abril (sister bridge of the Golden Gate in San Francisco); Ponte Vasco da Gama (the longest bridge in Europe if you include the viaducts); Aqueduto das Aguas Livres (historic aqueduct); Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Monument to the Discoveries); Belem Tower; Coach Museum; and Statue to Afonso de Albuquerque. Lisbon is known for its lively nightlife with areas such as Alcântara, Santos, Parque das Nações, and especially Bairro Alto known to ‘rock till dawn’. For the best Portuguese traditional, head to the area of Chiado where seafood will be top on the menu. For sports fans the city has two famous football clubs, Benfica and Sporting Lisbon. Lisbon (Estádio da Luz) was also host to the final of the UEFA Euro 2004 tournament where, sadly for Portuguese fans, Greece beat the hosts Portugal to lift the trophy.
