Lisbon Portela International Airport (IATA: LIS, ICAO: LPPT) is located 7 km (4.3 miles) north of the old town centre of Lisbon. The name Portela is derived from rom the neighbouring parish (freguesia) of Portela. It is the principal airport of Portugal and is one of the largest airports in Southern Europe. During the second world war the airport was open to both German and Allied civilian airlines, due to the neutral status of Portugal. The airport featured in the film Casablanca, as the destination of the escaping couple, at the end of the film. Today the airport is enclosed in the urban area of Lisbon with little room for expansion. A new airport site has been identified at Alcochete Airport, which is currently used as a military training facility. The planned replacement date is 2017. Ground transport is available via AeroBus, AeroShuttle bus services, and taxis. Most of the buses have internal route screens, which display the bus stops and have a list of local hotels. As the airport is situated close within the city dedicated airport hotels are few, although the Hotel Radisson Sas Lisboa and Golden Tulip Altis Park are relatively close by. Some of the hotels offer a shuttle service but is advisable to check on availability and fares.
