Lugano is situated in the south of Switzerland, in the Italian speaking canton of Ticino. The city lies beside Lake Lugano, which also extends into Italy, and has spectacular views of both lake and mountains. Lugano has many attractions to entice visitors including: St. Lawrence Cathedral; Monte San Salvatore; Piazza Riforma (Town Hall, and outdoor chess on oversize boards); Villa Favorita; and The chocolate factory. Interestingly, Lugano also has a surprisingly large number of museums including: Modern Art Museum; Cantonal Art Museum; Swiss Custom Museum; Municipal Art Museum; Gottardo Gallery; and the Hermann Hesse Museum. Lugano hosts two principal music events: the Blues to Bop Festival (end of August/early September); and the Estival Jazz (July).

Lake Lugano (Italian: Lago di Lugano or Ceresio) is a lake in the south-east of Switzerland, at the border between Switzerland and Italy. The lake, named after the city of Lugano, is situated between Lago Maggiore and Lago di Como. Well known mountains and tourist destinations on the shores of the lake are Monte Brè (925 m) east, Monte San Salvatore (912 m) west of Lugano and Monte Generoso (1,701 m) on the south-east shore. The World Heritage Site Monte San Giorgio (1,097 m) is situated south of the lake.
Lugano (Latin language: Luganum) is a town (130,000 people in the agglomeration) in the south of Switzerland, in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino, which borders Italy. The city's warm summers, and the fact that in recent years it has attracted an ever growing number of celebrities, entertainers and successful sports people has given it the nickname of the "Monte Carlo of Switzerland".
Lugano is a lakeside city in Ticino, the Italian-speaking part of southern Switzerland. Lugano also makes a good base for visiting other cities and sites in the area.
Canton Ticino is the southernmost canton of Switzerland. The written language is Italian in almost the entire canton (except the Walser municipality of Bosco Gurin, where it is German). It surrounds the Italian exclave of Campione d'Italia. Together with areas of the canton of Graubünden it makes up the so-called Svizzera Italiana (Italian Switzerland). Lombard dialects (Ticinese) are still spoken, especially in the valleys, but they have no official status. It is named after the Ticino river.
