Lviv Lvov. Pop. 760,000. Currency - Hryvnia (UAH). Language – Ukrainian (with Russian as a second language). Time Zone GMT + 2 hours. Main airport – Lviv Danylo Halytskyi International Airport LWO. Best Time to go - spring, summer and fall, as the weather is usually sunny and clear then, winters are often very cold. sLviv is located on the western edge of Ukraine and is 70 km from the Polish border and 160 km from the eastern Carpathian Mountain Range. The city was founded in 1256 and has a distinct multicultural history with Poles, Jews, Ukrainians, Germans and others all living at one time in and around the city. Indeed the city has a central European architectural style and the historic city center is now on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Visitors to Lviv will get a flavour for these European influences by taking in buildings and locations such as – Lychakivsky Tsvyntar (Lychakiv Cemetery), Union of Lublin mound, High Castle (Vysokyi zamok), Market Square (Ploshcha Rynok), Shevchenko Monument, Lviv Opera and Ballet National Academic Theatre, The L'viv Art Gallery, The Lviv National Museum, Natural History Museum, and S. Krushelnytska Opera House. However, it is the range of different cathedrals and churches that, arguably, provides the evidence of the city’s multicultural past. These include - Latin Cathedral (Roman Catholic), St. George's Cathedral (Greek Catholic), Armenian Cathedral (Armenian Apostolic), Dormition Cathedral (Orthodox), and Russian Orthodox Cathedral. From a more recent cultural and sporting perspective - the city was chosen as a venue for the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship and a new stadium – the Arena Lviv was opened on October 2011. It is hoped that when football fans attend matches in Lviv they will want to return as tourists to see one of the most beautiful cities in Eastern Europe without the feeling of being swamped by visitors as experienced in Krakow or Prague.

Travel Quote: The traveller was active; he went strenuously in search of people, of adventure, of experience. The tourist is passive; he expects interesting things to happen to him. He goes "sight-seeing". Daniel J. Boorstin.
