Lyon. Pop. 472,305. Currency - Euro. Language – French. Time Zone GMT + 1 hour. Main airport – Lyon Saint Exupéry Airport LYS. Best Time to go – May, June, September for weather and local events. However, the prestige event in Lyon is the The Festival of Lights (Fête des Lumières) which takes place in early December, and attracts over 4 million visitors every year, ranking it with the Oktoberfest in Munich. Lyon is located in east-central France in the region Rhône-Alpes, situated between Paris and Marseille. The city is strategically located at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers and it is this feature that attracted the Romans to develop a settlement in 43BC. The city built up a major silk industry up to the end of the 19th century. Modern Lyon has developed into a major industrial and service centre, and is also now established as the food capital of France. The city is subdivided into 9 administrative subdivisions called arrondissements. However, for visitors there are 4 key areas of interest: Fourvière hill (original site of Roman settlement); Vieux Lyon (Old Lyon along the ight bank of the Saône River); Presqu'île (between the two rivers); and Croix-Rousse (home to the original Lyon silk workers). For visitors some key sites include: the view from Fourvière basilica; Streets and traboules in Vieux Lyon; St Jean cathedral; Traboules in Croix-Rousse; Musées Gadagne; and the Parc de la Tête d'Or. However, it is the cuisine that brings many people local delicacies as: salade lyonnaise (green salad with bacon cubes, croutons and a poached egg); quenelle de brochet (dumpling made of flour and egg with pike fish and a crayfish sauce); rognons de veau à la moutarde (veal kidneys in a mustard sauce); and cervelle de canut (fresh cheese with garlic and herbs).
