Manila. Pop. 1,500,000. Currency - Peso. Language – Filipino and English. Time Zone – GMT + 8 hours. Airport - Manila Ninoy Aquino NAIA (MNL). Best time to go – December to February is a pleasant time to visit. Manila is an exciting mix of different cultures and sites and resembles a Latin American city in many of the older districts and there are distinct Spanish influences in the architecture. The main areas for tourists are along Manila Bay and include: Intramuros – (home to the remains of the old walled Spanish settlement and Manila Cathedral - Intramuros is Spanish for 'within the walls'); Manila Hotel – (General Douglas MacArthur made his home here before World War II); Malacanang Palace – (the official residence of the president of the Philippines); and Chinatown – (Manila has one of the largest Chinatowns in the world). For new visitors one of the best ways to experience Manila is to go to a ‘tiangge’, a market of stalls, where everything can be bargained. Good markets are St. Francis Square, Greenhills Shopping Center, and Tiendesitas. Other popular areas are Ermita and Malate, the latter being the night life and live music centre.
