Medellin Population - 2,500,000 Currency – Peso (COP). Language - Spanish. Time Zone - GMT - 5 hours. Airport - José María Córdova International Airport (MDE) Best Time to go – All year round destination. Medellin, the second largest city in a Colombia, rests in the Aburra Valley, one of the most northerly regions of the Andes and is known as the “City of Eternal Spring” due to its constant mild weather. The valley itself was discovered by Spanish explorer Jeronimo Luis Tejelo in 1541 and Medellin was founded later in 1616 by Spanish conqueror Francisco Herrera y Campuzano under the name of San Lorenzo de Aburra. For a city offering such beautiful scenery, parks and wonderful, varied nightlife it seems a shame that so many people will associate Medallin with Colombia's most famous criminal. Pablo Escobar was reported to be the 7th richest man in the world through drug trade and had his headquarters in Medellin. After his death at the hands of armed police in 1993, the city is slowly but surely shaking of its dangerous reputation. The people of Medallin (Paisas) are famous for their hospitality and friendliness and many of their festivals and celebrations can be experienced throughout the year and for museum lovers there are The Modern Art Museum, The Anthropological Museum, The Museo de Antioquia and The Museo Zea.
