It has a subtropical climate, which is influenced by the Gulf Stream resulting in mild winters and warm humid summers. Miami can experience heavy rainfall from May to early October and the hurricane season can extend from June to November. From it’s founding as a city in 1896, Miami has experienced rapid population growth in recent years and has a large number of ethnic Latin Americans and Caribbean islanders. This cosmopolitan mixture of North, Central, and South American cultures has earned Miami the title “Gateway of the Americas” and has generated strong economic links to Latin America. Economically, the city has developed a powerful financial community and a number of large corporations are now headquartered in the Miami area including - Alienware, AutoNation, Burger King, Carnival Cruise Lines, Citrix Systems, DHL, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, and Ryder Systems. Tourism and real estate development are also growing industries with visitors and investment coming from both the USA and further afield. Attractions and activities for visitors are numerous including – Sea Aquarium, County Fair & Exposition, Tropical Park Equestrian Center, Eco-Adventure Tours, Canoe Trips, Kayaking and Snorkeling, and Bike Tours. Miami is also close to many superb beaches, notably South Beach in nearby Miami Beach. Sports fans will be excited with the exploits of the Miami Dolphins Football and Miami Heat Basketball teams.
