It was formerly part of the Yugoslavian group of countries but became fully independent on 3rd June 2006 after a referendum. The country is divided into 21 municipalities, which are grouped into 3 main regions: Coastal Region (includes Bay of Kotor and Budva riviera); Central Region (home of capital Podgorica, and historical capital Cetinje); and Northern Region (part of the rugged Dinaric Alps). Some key destinations for visitors include: Budva (the most popular resort with beaches and a lively nightlife); Boka Kotorska (a beautiful bay and home to the historic old towns of Kotor and Perast); Bar (the largest seaport and home to the worlds oldest olive tree); Tara canyon (deepest canyon in Europe popular for rafting); and Sveti Stefan (iconic island hotel complex which features on many postcards). The country is rapidly developing as a major tourist destination. The combination of rich architectural and cultural heritage, diversity of landscapes and climates, and well preserved natural environment provides a wide range of sites and activities for European visitors. One attraction which has caught a few visitors by surprise is, "rakija" a plum spirit (usually about 53% alcohol content).
