Montevideo. Pop. 1,325,968. Currency Uruguayan Peso. Language Spanish. Time Zone GMT - 3 hours. Carrasco International Airport MVD. Best Time to go – December to March. Montevideo is the largest city, capital and chief port of Uruguay. The city is situated in the south of Uruguay on one of the most important harbours in South America. Montevideo was first found by Juan Diaz De Solis in 1516. It then experienced control from the Spanish, Portuguese and British. During World War II the city was embroiled in the German pocket battleship Graf Spee incident which resulted in the scuttling of the ship and the suicide of the captain Hans Langsdorff. The city went through a period of decline in the middle of the 20th century due to both military dictatorship and economic stagnation. However, recent economic recovery and stronger trade ties with Uruguay's neighbours have led to renewed agricultural development and hopes for greater future prosperity. The city has a strong football history. Montevideo hosted all the matches of the 1st FIFA World Cup in 1930. Uruguay won the tournament by defeating Argentina 4-2, and later in 1950 defeated heavy favored hosts Brazil 2-1, achieving its second World Cup Championship.
