Montreal is the second largest city in Canada and is also the second largest French speaking city in the world next to Paris. The city takes it's name from Mont-Royal, the distinctive triple-peaked hill located in the heart of the city. Montreal is strategically locate largely on the Island of Montreal at the confluence of the Saint Lawrence and Ottawa Rivers, and it's port is the largest inland port in the world handling over 26 million tonnes of cargo per year. This cargo includes - grain, sugar, petroleum products, machinery, consumer goods much of which is transferred onto rail – the Canadian Pacific Railway was headquartered in the city until 1995. Montreal has a rich cultural history with many French and European influences. Evidence of this abounds with attractions such as - Old Montréal (contains most of the historical buildings and museums, many dating from the 17th to 19th century), Le Plateau (home to scenic residential streets with fancy shopping and dining), Downtown (home to skyscrapers, McGill campus, churches, and museums), and Parc Jean-Drapeau (site of the 1967 World's Fair). Montreal also has a strong academic tradition exemplified by McGill University - a research insititution named after James McGill, a prominent Montreal merchant, from Scotland who bequeathed land and money in the early 19th century for the establishment of the university. The city is also a major sporting centre and a must see is the Canadiens ice hockey team, an institution in the Province of Quebec culture, and winners of 24 Stanley Cup championships a National Hockey League (NHL) record. For petrol heads The Canadian Grand Prix of Formula One (F1) racing takes place on the famous Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Île Notre-Dame.
