Moscow is both the largest and capital city of Russia. Moscow is rated as a Beta world city for its global influences in media, politics, education, entertainment and fashion. It also remains a major economic centre and is home to a large number of billionaires. The origins of Moscow date back to the early 12th Century, when a city wall was established and the city started to grow. Following the Russian Revolution of 1917, on March 12, 1918, Moscow became the capital of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic and the Soviet Union less than five years later. The city was nearly captured by the German army in 1941 but the attack was repelled by a combination of resolute defending, bold tactics, and the ferocious Russian winter. Modern Moscow has emerged as an exciting city international city as evidenced by the establishment of global brands such as - McDonald's, Ikea, and TGI Friday's. For the sight- seeing visitor there are many places to take in including: Red Square; Lenin Mausoleum; St Basil Cathedral; The Kremlin; Old Arbat Street; Bolshoi Theater; Tretyakov Gallery; Pushkin Museum; Novodevichy Convent; Tverskaya Street; Gorky Park; Victory Park; Christ the Savior Cathedral; and the Garden of Fallen Monuments. There are a number of transport methods of getting to these sights, the most famous being the Metro system with its distinctive architecture and cheap fares. Above ground there is the Moscow taxi industry which will whisk you round the Moscow ‘Ring Roads’ at a price normally negotiated with the driver. There is a vibrant night life in Moscow. The major and one of the most popular nightlife areas is around Tverskaya Street. The southern part of Tverskaya Street near the Manege Square and the Red Square area is known as an area with many expensive, luxurious bars and restaurants, and is a magnet for New Russians and celebrities.

Moscow is the capital of Russia and the country's economic, financial, educational, and transportation centre. It is located on the Moskva River in the Central Federal District, in the European part of Russia. The most populous city in Europe, Moscow has a population of 12.6 million[1], which constitutes about 7% of the total Russian population. Historically, it was the capital of the former Soviet Union and the Grand Duchy of Moscow, the pre-Imperial Russian state. It is the site of the Kremlin, which now serves as the ceremonial residence of the President of Russia.
Much of Moscow's geography is defined by the numerous 'Ring Roads' that circle the city at various distances from the center. With Red Square and the Kremlin forming the very center, the innermost ring road is the Boulevard Ring, which runs from the Christ the Saviour Cathedral in south-west central Moscow, to the mouth of the Yauza in south-east central Moscow.
