The Governor of Ceylon was a British official who ruled Ceylon(currently Sri Lanka) during the colonial period between 1798 and 1948. Upon the end of British rule and the creation of Dominion of Ceylon in 1948, this office was replaced by the Governor-General which it self was abolished in 1972 and replace by the post of President when Sri Lanka became a Republic.
The Sinhalese are the main ethnic group of Sri Lanka. They speak Sinhala, an Indo-European language and number approximately 15 million people with the vast majority found in Sri Lanka, while more than 300,000 live in other countries, mainly in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and the United Kingdom. Many Sinhalese live in the coastal belt near Mount Lavinia.

It is one of the most liberal regions in Sri Lanka and also plays host to the island's annual gay pride, including the famed Rainbow Kite Festival. Mount Lavinia is steeped in history. The city's name is built up around the original residence of Sir Thomas Maitland who was the Governor General of Ceylon from 1805-1811.
Mount Lavinia is a seaside resort known for its beaches, and Dehiwala is noted for its zoological garden. The area grew rapidly in the mid-20th century.
