Formerly know as Bombay the city is the state capital of Maharashtra, and is one of the world’s largest metropolitan areas with 20 million people in the city and suburbs. Mumbai is located on the north west side of India and is home to a deep natural harbour which was extensively developed to export products from Mumbai’s textile factories. Mumbai is also home to the Hindi language film industry popularly referred to as Bollywood. Places to visit include: Gateway of India Monument, Flora Fountain, Chowpatty Beach, Marine Drive, Haji Ali mosque, Kamala Nehru Park & Hanging Gardens, Mahalaxmi Race Course, Taraporewala Aquarium and Victoria Gardens. The preferred time to see Mumbai is during the dry season September-October to March-April. The humid season, especially the months of June to September, produces temperatures of over 30 oC (86 oF) and monsoon rain, which can cause flooding and disruption to city services.
