The city is also the birthplace of many famous people including: Josef Dieter 'Sepp' Maier (goalkeeper); Markus Babbel (footballer); Heinrich Himmler (nazi organiser); Franz Josef Strauß (Bavarian president); Curt Jürgens (actor); Harold Faltermeyer (composer); Carl Orff (composer); Richard Strauss (composer); Eugen Roth (writer); and Franz Marc (painter). However, arguably Munich’s most famous son, is Franz Beckenbauer who was twice selected the European Footballer of the Year, appeared 103 times for West Germany and played in three World Cups. Finally no guide to Munich would be complete without reference to the Oktoberfest beer festival. For two weeks, the Oktoberfest, attracts millions of people visiting its beer tents ("Bierzelte") and fairground attractions. The Oktoberfest was first held on October 12, 1810 in honor of the marriage of crown prince Ludwig to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen.

Oktoberfest - Munich
