Best times to go – Mid April to May and September to Mid December. Nassau is the capital and largest city in The Bahamas and it is located on New Providence Island. Originally founded by the British in 1650 Nassau, with it's strategic harbour, became an attractive base for piracy operations although the pirates were largely driven out by the 1750s. Today the port of Nassau is a major port, not for privateers, but vast cruise ships who disgorge their passengers onto the shopping areas around Bay Street and Straw Market. Many of the other attractions in Nassau are accessible by walking such as - Ardastra Gardens, Zoo & Conservation Center, National Art Gallery of the Bahamas, Fort Fincastle, and the Pirate Museum. The most prominent sight is The massive Atlantis resort on nearby Paradise Island which accounts for more tourist arrivals to the city than any other hotel property. This huge complex also employs over 6,000 Bahamians, and is the largest employer outside of government. Other hotels in Nassau are concentrated in the Cable Beach district which is also home to some good restaurants.
