Netherlands Antilles. Pop - 183,000. Area - 800 km². Capital - Willemstad. Largest City – Willemstad. Currency – Netherlands Antillean Guilder. Language – English, Papiamentu and Dutch. Main Religions – Roman Catholic. Time Zone – GMT - 4 hours. Main Airport – Hato International Airport CUR. Climate – tropical climate. Voltage guide 127V. Dialing code 599. The Netherlands Antilles are made up of two groups of islands in the Caribbean: Curaçao and Bonaire, just off the Venezuelan coast, and Sint Eustatius, Saba and Sint Maarten, located southeast of the Virgin Islands. As the name infers the islands are connected to the Netherlands. This tie goes back to the 17th century when the islands were conquered by the Dutch West India Company and were used as military outposts and trade bases. The topography of the islands consists of hilly, volcanic terrain. The highest point is Mount Scenery, 862 metres (2,828 ft), on Saba (also the highest point in all the Kingdom of the Netherlands), no doubt a good pub quiz question. The economy is made up of oil refinement, petroleum shipment, offshore finance, and tourism. An event well worth seeing is the holiday of Carnival with lots of festivities including "jump-up" parades with beautifully colored costumes, floats, and live bands as well as beauty contests and other competitions.
