The New York City Marathon is now the largest participant marathon race in the world. The course starts at at Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island, military base for almost 200 years. The course takes runners over the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, the longest single-span suspension bridge in North America, and passes through all of New York City's five boroughs: Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Manhattan, before finishing at Tavern on the Green in Central Park.

The New York City Marathon is an annual marathon road race run over a 42,195 m (26.2 mile) course through all five boroughs of New York City. It is the largest marathon in the world, with 37,850 finishers in 2006. Along with the Boston Marathon and Chicago Marathon, it is among the pre-eminent long-distance annual running events in the United States and is one of the World Marathon Majors.

The New York City Marathon has been run since 1970 and is held on the first Sunday of November.
