New York John F Kennedy Airport (IATA: JFK, ICAO: KJFK, FAA LID: JFK) is located Queens County, New York (19 km; 12 miles) south east of Manhattan. The airport is named after John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States. and is the busiest international gateway into the USA. JFK is run by Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which also runs the two other major airports in the New York area, Newark Liberty and LaGuardia. JFK has 8 terminals which contain 151 gates. The terminals are connected by the AirTrain system. The airport is hugely important to the economy of New York and contributes about $30.1 billion in economic activity to the NYC region, generating 229,000 jobs and about $9.8 billion in wages and salaries. JFK directly employs over 30,000 people. Transfer to New York City and Manhattan is mainly by Rail, Taxi, and Bus. TLD staff have been to New York several times and have always used the New York Yellow Cabs which offer a flat rate of $45 (2009 prices), which excludes bridge/tunnel tolls and tips. Depending on time of day the journey time should be about 35 40 minutes. Passengers may be approached by private cabs offering alternative taxis and fares. We would advise travellers to always use the official yellow cabs. The other main alternative transfer mode is AirTrain JFK which connects to the New York main subway/rail system. For air travellers with an early departure time or who are on looking for accommodation around JFK there are airport hotels nearby including Best Western Kennedy Airport Hotel, Holiday Inn Express Kennedy Airport, and Doubletree Hotel Jfk Airport.
