Newcastle upon Tyne. Pop. 273,600. County – Tyne and Wear. Currency – Pound Sterling. Time Zone (GMT + 0). Main Airport – Newcastle Airport NCL. Best time to go – Lots of things to see and do all year round including lively nightlife and the famous Newcastle United FC. Newcastle is located in the north east of England on the banks of the River Tyne. The city developed as a wool-trading centre then into a major coal producing area. Sadly, these businesses have declined but the city has re-invented itself as a business and cultural centre. There are many sites and activities to keep visitors interested. Things to see include: The River Tyne (the centre-piece of the city); Tyne Bridge (iconic symbol of the engineering past); Segedunum (old roman fort); Central Arcade (traditional shopping arcade); and Grainger Town (historic heart of the city). For nightlife try the famous Bigg Market ord the Quayside area of the city centre, and make sure you sample the famous Newcastle Brown Ale. However, no visit to Newcastle can be called complete without a visit to St. James’ Park home of Newcastle United Football Club and their vociferous supporters who are known as the ‘Toon Army’.
