Due to Nicosia International Airport lying in the United Nations controlled Buffer Zone, separating the two zones, it has been inoperable since 1974. Best Time to go – spring and summer. Nicosia (known as Ledra or Ledrae in ancient times) is the capital and largest city in Cyprus. It is still effectively partitioned into 2 zones: 270,00 in the Greek zone; and 84,893 in the Turkish zone (2004 figures). Indeed Nicosia is known as the world's last divided capital. Nicosia's sights are concentrated in and around the Old City, surrounded by a picturesque star-shaped city wall with a host of historical and cultural attractions including: Byzantine Museum; National Struggle Museum; House of the Dragoman Hadjigeorgakis Kornesios; Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre; Nicosia Municipal Theatre; and the Hamam Omerye. Visitors can also cross over to Northern Cyprus and the northern side of Nicosia via the checkpoint near the Ledra Palace hotel, on the western side of the city wall.
