Norway. Pop - 4,721,600. Area - 385,155 km². Capital - Oslo. Largest City – Oslo. Currency – Norwegian krone. Language – Norwegian. Main Religion – Christianity. Time Zone – GMT + 1 hour. Main Airports – Oslo (Gardermoen OSL), Bergen BGO, Trondheim (TRD), Stavanger (SVG). Climate – 4 distinct seasons with an Arctic tundra climate in the far north. Voltage guide 230V. Dialing code 47. Norway is a constitutional monarchy in Northern Europe that occupies the western portion of the Scandinavian Peninsula. The country is divided into 6 broad regions: East Norway (the region surrounding the capital Oslo), South Norway, West Norway (locations of the famous fjords); Middle Norway; Northern Norway; and Svalbard (Arctic islands near the polar ice). The country is famous for the fjords – steep narrow valleys cut by glaciers and filled with sea water. Norway is home to two of the longest fjords in the world - Sognefjord 203 km (126 miles), and Hardangerfjord 179 km (111 miles). The Norwegian economy is an example of as very successful mixed economy, featuring a combination of free market activity and large government ownership. The government controls key areas, such as the strategic petroleum sector (StatoilHydro), hydroelectric energy production Statkraft), aluminium production (Norsk Hydro), the largest Norwegian bank (DnB NOR) and telecommunication provider (Telenor). Norway since 1995 has invested it’s oil revenue in The Government Pension Fund of Norway which by 2006 was valued at a staggering $200 billion. The fund is expected to top $800-900 billion by 2017. The main cities and towns in Norway include: Oslo (capital and largest city); Bergen (the second city); Trondheim (third city); Stavanger (fourth city); Ålesund (spectacular location); Fredrikstad (stunning old town); Haugesund (good for fjords); Kristiansand (capital of south Norway); Skien (birthplace of the ski); Tromsø (far northern city of culture). Other destinations not be missed are: Geiranger fjord (stunning fjord landscape); Jotunheimen (home of Norway's highest mountains); Lofoten Islands (landscape lifted from the ‘Lord of the Rings’); and Nordkapp (northernmost point of continental Europe). Few would argue that the best way of seeing Norway are the coastal ferries that shuttle up the coastline taking in the stunning scenery en route.
