Opatija is located in the north west of Croatia close to the border with Slovenia and is beside the Gulf of Kvarner. It is very popular resort both in winter and summer. The city's most famous landmark is the Villa Angiolina, which was built in 1844 by Iginio Scarpa, a rich merchant from Rijeka, a larger town nearby. Opatija became a fashionable destination for the Austrian imperial family and Austrian nobility. Indeed today Austrian tourists are frequent visitors to Opatija.

Christian Albert Theodor Billroth (born 26 August 1829 in Bergen auf Rügen, Germany; died 6 February 1894 in Opatija, Austria-Hungary, now Croatia), was a German-born Austrian surgeon and amateur musician. As a surgeon, he is generally regarded as the founding father of modern abdominal surgery. As a musician, he was a close friend and confidante of Johannes Brahms, a leading patron of the Viennese musical scene, and was one of the first to attempt a scientific analysis of musicality.
Dr Leo Henryk Sternbach (May 7, 1908 – September 28, 2005) was a Polish-Jewish chemist who is credited with inventing the benzodiazepine, a class of tranquilizers. He was born in Opatija, then in Austria-Hungary and now part of Croatia.
Opatija (Italian: Abbazia, German: Sankt Jakobi) is a town in western Croatia, just southwest of Rijeka on the Adriatic coast, population 7,850 (2001), total municipality population 12,719 (2001). It is a popular summer and winter resort, with average temperatures of 10°C in winter, and 25°C in summer. Opatija is surrounded by beautiful woods of bay laurel. The whole sea-coast to the north and south of Opatija is rocky and picturesque, and contains several smaller winter resorts.
Volosko (Italian: Volosco, Volosca) is a part of the city of Opatija, located in the Kvarner Gulf in western Croatia. It is located in the north of Opatija, on the road towards Kastav and Rijeka.
